Welding Quality Specialist (CWI Required)Job Description Department: QualityReports To: Quality Control SupervisorFLSA Status: Exempt (Salary) Date 02/24/2026Location: Kansas City, MO Summary:We are seeking an experienced Welding Quality Specialist (CWI) to serve as the technical authority and owner of the company’s welding program. This role is responsible for establishing, governing, and maintaining welding standards in accordance with AWS D1.1. The position exercises independent judgment in interpreting code requirements, approving welding procedures, and making decisions that materially impact compliance, liability, and operational direction. The Welding Quality Specialist will focus primarily on welding governance, systems development, and program oversight while partnering with Production, Engineering, and Quality leadership to ensure scalable, compliant fabrication practices. Essential Duties and Responsibilities:Own and govern the company’s welding program, including development, qualification, and revision control of WPS, PQR, and welder qualification recordsExercise independent authority to interpret and apply AWS D1.1 requirements and approve or reject welding procedures and practicesMake technical decisions impacting structural compliance, regulatory adherence, and operational riskLead welding program governance, documentation systems, and internal compliance auditsEstablish and maintain welder continuity tracking and qualification standardsPerform and oversee visual weld inspections to ensure compliance with engineering drawings and code requirementsIdentify process gaps and implement corrective actions to reduce weld-related nonconformanceStandardize welding parameters and equipment settings across production linesCoordinate NDT activities and review acceptance criteriaTrain and coach welders and inspectors on WPS adherence and quality expectations Required Skills and Qualifications:Active CWI certification5+ years structural welding experienceDemonstrated experience developing or qualifying WPS/PQRStrong knowledge of AWS D1.1Blueprint, weld symbol, and GD&T proficiency Preferred Skills and Qualifications:Experience implementing welding quality systems in a growing fabrication environmentPrior experience supporting ISO 9001 environmentsExperience coordinating third-party NDT Working Conditions:Work is conducted inside and outside during all-weather typesThe job is performed under extreme temperature variations and some hazardous conditionsWalking, climbing, standing, sitting, and lifting are requiredTasks may involve moderate to heavy physical labor Physical Requirements:Occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing on ladders and platforms, significant stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling throughout an 8-12 hour dayAbility to work with hands and perform routine lifting, up to 50 lbs.Stand for extended periods of time.
